Dear Isaac,
I've started a tradition with your older brothers where I write them a letter every month talking about their growth, development, and personalities. I want to do the same for you! Hopefully you will treasure them when you're older and enjoy hearing about your life as a little one. With three kids barely four and under, it's definitely hard to find the time to write them, but I will try my hardest to make it happen.
Even though you're a mere one month old, you have already brought so much joy to our family. You have the sweetest little spirit. Like most one month olds, you don't have a ton of personality yet, but you are already smiling at us. From what I can remember, your brothers didn't smile until they were quite a bit older, so it's been fun to have you interacting a little bit already. We can almost always get a smile out of you if we make kissy noises at you. For some reason, you think that is the greatest thing in the world. You'll almost always crack a grin if we do it for you.
There is no doubt that your eyes are going to be blue. I knew it from the moment I saw them in the delivery room right after you were born. They're not blueish-gray like Oliver's were but are a true, bright blue. They're so beautiful! I can't believe that two out of my three boys have blue eyes! While I was pregnant, I was sure that you were going to be my dark baby and come out with lots of dark hair, dark brown eyes, and dark skin, but no! You're another blondie! I was very surprised when I saw you. I guess your dad's Mexican genes aren't as strong as my gringo ones!
You slept a ton during your first 3 weeks of life. You'd sleep pretty much anywhere. We could lay you down on the bed or in the swing and you'd drift off to la la land. But you really "woke up" this past week and have gotten really particular about where you'll sleep. And you pretty much only want to sleep on me. Trust me, I absolutely love holding you while you sleep, but I have 2 and 4 year olds to take care of too, and it's really hard to find the time to just sit there with you. The past few days, I've been wearing you a lot in a baby carrier and you've been dozing on me. It's been a pretty good solution except for the fact that my back kills after carrying you around for hours.
Your colic has hit hard. As soon as late afternoon or evenings roll around, you start fussing and there's pretty much nothing we can do to comfort you. It often takes us four or five hours to get you to go to sleep for the night. It's exhausting. Your dad and I will take turns bouncing and rocking you. We try everything to get you to sleep. We swaddle you, give you a binkie, take you on walks, and I nurse you over and over. It always takes hours to get you down for the night, but once you're finally down, you do pretty well at staying asleep. You usually only wake up once in the dead of night to eat (usually between 1:00-3:00 a.m.) and then again in the early morning (5:00-7:00 a.m.). I can usually get you to go back to sleep pretty quickly after you eat. We've been having you sleep on the giant love sack in the basement because it is soft and hugs you more than a flat, hard crib. I cut dairy out of my diet a few days ago to see if that will help your colic. We'll see....
You love baths. As soon as we slide you into the warm water, you get calm and alert. You kick your little legs and flail your arms around. You love having your hair washed and I love how you feel and smell when you get out. I can't stop kissing your squishy cheeks! You are so cute, sometimes I want to squeeze you to pieces. You are a great nurser and know exactly what you're doing. You're pretty noisy while you eat. You like to grunt and slurp the milk down, just like your brothers did. I love it.
Isaac, as challenging as it is to have a newborn, it is worth every second. I love you so much and feel so incredibly blessed to be your mother. I thank Heavenly Father every day that you arrived on the earth safely and that you're a part of our family. I can't wait to see you grow and develop and I'm excited to get to know you even more.
Lots of love,
Mama
